Is chatGPT really the IT?
There has been a lot of buzz about chatGPT and how it tends to replace developers, especially Junior developers.
Let me give you a background of what chatGPT is. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. It has a minimal interface and much like a messaging app, you can type in your issues and the answers are brought up. It is a prototype dialog-based AI that understands natural human language and it responds in a short time with solutions to your request You can ask the bot anything from requesting that it writes you an essay to coding solutions to poems to an algorithm to mathematical solutions, name it.
Here is an example of my interaction with chatGPT
One thing is for sure, the way we perceive and use technology will continually evolve and nothing will remain the same. Artificial intelligence is one of the technology tools changing the game.
However, there are a few things to note.
ChatGPT is a robot built by OpenAI, made with artificial intelligence, and hence, does exactly what it is told. The bot is free for now and was introduced by Jeremy Howard, an artificial intelligence researcher. It is a deep learning model, a natural language processing model, and is currently the most talked about technology.
If 100 people are given an essay to write and the 100 people use chatGPT, there is an 80% chance that 90 people will have very similar answers except if the questions are tweaked and true, the results won’t be far from each other. ChatGPT does only provide saved solutions in usable forms.
Although it is assumed that chatGPT has the ability to update itself, correct itself and rewrite solutions using different techniques and high-knowledge reasoning, it still poses limitations to man's creativity, intellectual capacity, and ability to bring up totally new phenomena. It basically gives you a google answer in the exact form you need it.
How it works
First, you write out your question, and it takes it and puts it in the form requirement. It then spools out your data as requested by you. cool right?
chatGPT is not free from mistakes. Because it works with pre-information, it can only answer based on pre-information. It is not all-knowing. It also does not have all the answers to every question. see this.
However, chatGPT is good and useful. For developers, it is a great advancement away from stack overflow, code grepper, google search, and other means of figuring out code solutions as it not only tells what to do but also does it. All that is needed is a copy and paste. In a way, I would say chatGPT as at this moment cannot replace developers. However, in the future, chatGPT will gain competition, will be improved, and will also have more models and versions. This is not to put fear in anyone but to spread the news that unless you upskill and upskill fast, more technologies are on the way to replace human labor. The world won’t be needing millions of developers in years to come. I mean, that is actually the essence of technology isn’t it?
Also, chatGPT can be compared to google search. More like added visuals to google search.
ChatGPT is currently saving millions of users from helping to resolve code issues which makes you clean up your work quickly to helping compose emails, content, articles, and much more.
One needs to be careful with taking verbatim information from chatGPT as it is a robot and gives out what it has hence can give out the same data to millions of users.
One exciting thing about chatGPT is how much it has reminded us of what is possible with technology and what is to come.
It surely will be an exciting journey. Machines replacing human labor have been the norm right from the start. It happened in 1970, in 1980 and it is still happening. What makes you think it won’t happen years from now?
Build capacity, grow, learn and build so you do not remain at the bottom as the bottom last is always taken out first.
